A Field Guide to the Yard

From the Founders' Notebook

Twenty-Four Seasons in This Soil

Every landscape tells you what it needs, if you've spent enough seasons listening. H & R Gardening and Landscaping was built on that idea — that clay-heavy Inland Empire soil, punishing summer heat, and drought-cycle water restrictions aren't obstacles to design around, they're the starting brief. For 24 years we've worked directly with homeowners, commercial property managers, and apartment complex owners across San Bernardino County and Riverside County, holding active C-27 Landscape and C-49 Tree Service contractor licenses the entire time.

We were never a crew that just mows and leaves. We design, we install, we irrigate, we prune, and then we stay — maintaining what we built long after the invoice is paid. That's the difference between a landscaping company and a landscaping relationship, and it's the only kind of work we've ever wanted to do.

Chapter One — Turf & Garden Care

The Living Lawn

Southern California lawns don't forgive a generic maintenance schedule. Heat waves, drought cycles, and clay-heavy soils demand a program built around what the Inland Empire actually throws at your turf — not a national franchise's checklist. We handle the rhythm of mowing, edging, and trimming, then layer in fertilization and weed control timed to our climate, so a lawn either stays traditionally lush or transitions gracefully into a low-water landscape, whichever you're after.

  • Routine mowing, edging & seasonal cleanup
  • Turf care including sod installation & weed abatement
  • Fertilization programs tuned to Inland Empire soil
  • Ongoing gardening & plant bed maintenance
H & R has been maintaining our commercial property for years. They show up, they do quality work, and they never leave a mess behind. Exactly what a property manager needs.

Chapter Two — Landscape Design

A Place Worth Designing

A great landscape starts with a plan built for the land beneath your feet. We sit down with homeowners, apartment complex owners, and commercial property managers to design outdoor environments that are as functional as they are beautiful — from modern drought-tolerant streetscapes to lush garden retreats with stone pathways, water features, and outdoor living areas built to actually be used.

  • Drought-tolerant & traditional landscape design
  • Patios, pathways & built-in outdoor living features
  • Water features, stone walls & decorative hardscape
  • Scaled for residential, multifamily & commercial properties
They redesigned our entire front and back yard — drought-tolerant plants, new sprinkler system, stone pathway. It looks incredible and our water bill dropped noticeably.

Chapter Three — Irrigation & Sprinklers

Water, Wisely

In Southern California, an efficient irrigation system isn't a luxury — it's essential. We install, repair, and optimize sprinkler and drip irrigation for homes, businesses, and large commercial properties, calibrating every system to your plant types, sun exposure, and water budget. When something fails — a broken head, a dead controller — we troubleshoot it fast, so your landscape never goes thirsty and your water bill never runs away.

  • Drip irrigation for drought-tolerant landscapes
  • Irrigation system repairs & troubleshooting
  • Controller upgrades & seasonal scheduling

Chapter Five — For Commercial Grounds

Grounds That Represent Your Business

A well-kept landscape is the first impression your business makes before anyone walks through the door. We maintain and improve grounds for office parks, retail centers, industrial properties, and apartment complexes across the Inland Empire — handling lawn maintenance, irrigation management, pruning, and seasonal clean-up on a schedule built around your property, not a generic route.

Tall office buildings behind a green lawn with trees and bushes. Pathway lined with trees leading to a modern building. Lush green and yellow hedges framing a courtyard between modern buildings. Lush garden with paved walkway and grass lawn surrounded by trees. Colorful flowerbeds in a park with tall buildings in the background. Green lawn beside a planter, bordering a building and sidewalk.

The tree trimming crew was professional from start to finish. They cleaned up completely when they were done and the trees look so much better. Licensed, reliable, and fairly priced.

Chapter Seven — Where We Grow

Across the Inland Empire

Our trucks run daily loops through San Bernardino and Riverside Counties, from the older neighborhoods of San Bernardino proper out through the citrus-belt streets of Redlands and Yucaipa, into Loma Linda, East Highland Ranch, Colton, Fontana, Riverside, Corona, and Norco. Two decades of working this exact ground means we know which yards fight drought, which soils compact fast, and which HOAs need a specific finish — before we ever pull up the truck.
